Position: Building Engineer

RESPONSIBLE TO: Program Director

JOB DESCRIPTION: The building engineer performs general maintenance service and repairs in the areas of plumbing, carpentry, painting, plastering, machine services, electrical, and vehicle services. Retains professional assistance for maintenance and repairs when needed. Relies on instruction and/or pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job when necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes company vehicle(s) for assigned duties during office hours.

  • Keeps area around the office and shelter clean and trash-free.

  • Performs light cleaning duties.

  • Stocks pantry shelves at shelter.

  • Cleans and maintains company vehicles.

  • Maintains yard-area at shelter.

Daily:

  • Check with the Shelter Coordinator for any maintenance jobs or minor repairs that are needed.

  • Check to see if work orders have been placed in the “In-Box.”

  • Make sure emergency doors at the office and shelter are unobstructed and locked or unlocked if needed.

  • Make rounds of counseling center to see if all is functioning well, perform maintenance/repairs if needed.

  • Check and replace all lightbulbs as needed at the office and shelter.

  • Walk outside the perimeter of the office and shelter and check drains, make repairs if needed.

Weekly:

  • Check outside drains and lights to see if maintenance is needed.

  • Take trash out every Monday and Thursday morning at the office.

  • Check cameras at shelter to ensure they are working properly.

  • Check A/C vents for any needed maintenance/cleaning.

  • Check bathroom facilities at shelter to see that they are working properly.

  • Clean out walk-in cooler at shelter.

Bi-Weekly:

  • Check smoke alarms at office and shelter.

  • Check water heaters at office and shelter.

  • Check washers and dryers at shelter.

  • Check yard in front and around shelter, clean up debris as needed.

  • Check fire exit signs, replace lightbulbs as needed.

Monthly:

  • Check smoke alarms, make repairs or change batteries if needed.

  • Check refrigerator coils and drains and clean as needed.

  • Clean gutters at shelter.

  • Check on vehicle maintenance (inspections, oil changes, etc.).

Yearly:

  • Check if company vehicle inspection tags are up-to-date, renew if needed.

  • Check if company vehicle registration tags are up-to-date, renew if needed.

  • Check fire extinguishers at office and shelter, call for service to be performed if needed.

As Needed:

  • Keep outside AC cover clean; change all filters when indicated.

  • Maintain company vehicles as needed or take to appropriate repair facility.

  • Get all company vehicles inspected.

  • Contact any special licensed contractors (electricians, plumbers, telephone, security, etc.) as needed when major construction is not a factor if requested.

  • Take leftover minor construction trash to the waste facility.

  • Pick up donations as needed.

  • Perform construction of any interior walls, shelves or other items as approved per budget.

  • Paint interior and exterior walls as required.

  • Repair and maintain flooring as required.

  • Keep fence and gate in good repair at shelter.

  • Order repairs as they are needed.

  • Other assigned duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED/ Associate Degree in Building Maintenance preferred.

  • Ability to follow a routine check list.

  • Must have a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.

  • Must have proof of valid, current auto liability insurance.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a permit to work in the U.S..

  • Must be able to pass a background check and submit to drug testing if requested.

  • Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds.

  • Must be able to perform physically strenuous activities on a routine basis.

  • Must have general knowledge of household/facilities maintenance.

  • Due to insurance requirements eligible applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Important Information: This is a full-time, 37.5hour per week position eligible for employer-sponsored insurance

benefits and paid time off.
